The Prevalence of Joint Hypermobility in Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Students and Comparison of Differences in Upper Extremity Joint Position Sense

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of hypermobility among physiotherapy and rehabilitation students and to investigate whether there was a difference in upper extremity joint position sense between individuals with and without hypermobility. Methods: A total of 111 students from the physiotherapy and rehabilitation department who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria participated in the study. Hypermobility was assessed using the Beighton Score. Joint position sense evaluations were performed on the shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints. Results: Hypermobility was detected in 41.4% of the participants. No significant difference was found in joint position sense of the shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints between individuals with and without hypermobility (p>0.05). Conclusion: The findings indicated that hypermobility did not affect proprioceptive perception in the shoulder, elbow, and wrist joints. This result suggested that hypermobility does not have a significant impact on these specific joint regions.
