Damage mitigation of fault-crossing elbowed water transmission pipes using flexible joints
    (Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2026) Kaya, E. S.; Uckan, E.; Taciroglu, E.
The 2023 Mw 7.8 T & uuml;rkiye earthquake caused significant damage to water, natural gas, and crude oil transmission pipelines, resulting in widespread service disruptions. Notably, the 2.6m-diameter Duzbag water transmission steel pipeline with elbow joints ruptured due to a 5.0m offset at the Sogutlu fault crossing. This study investigates the damage progression of that pipe segment as a model problem and examines the use of flexible joints as a damage mitigation countermeasure while considering fault mapping uncertainties. A three-dimensional nonlinear soil-structure interaction model was developed and calibrated based on field observations. The results revealed that the numerical model successfully identified not only major and minor damage but also undetected hidden damage, which was later validated through field investigations by pipe operators. It was also found that stresses and deformations along the pipeline were concentrated at the flexible joints, while stresses in the pipe segments between these points were significantly reduced. Three pipe-fault intersection scenarios were analyzed to account for fault mapping uncertainty. In all cases, the proposed damage mitigation measure performed well.

Seismic Performance of Cylindrical Liquid Storage Tanks in the 2023 Kahramanmaras Earthquakes: A Case Study of a Self-Supported Oil Storage Tank
    (Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2025) Saka, A. C.; Kaya, E. S.; Uckan, E.
This paper covers the seismic performance of liquid tanks due to 2023 T & uuml;rkiye earthquakes and a case study of a moderately damaged self-supported tank is studied. Typical types of damage were sloshing induced upper tank wall deformations, sliding and uplift of the base, and rupture at tank-pipe connections. Besides, slip-prone tanks were less vulnerable to tank damage. The coupling between sliding and uplift responses of a self-supported tank is investigated considering different coefficients of friction. The results revealed that tank wall stresses can be significantly reduced due to sliding effect.

The performance of transmission pipelines on february 6th, 2023 Kahramanmaras earthquake: a series of case studies
    (Springer, 2025) Uckan, E.; Aksel, M.; Atas, O.; Toprak, S.; Kaya, E. S.
The Mw 7.8 earthquake that struck Kahramanmaras on February 6, 2023, caused significant damage to hydrocarbon and water transmission lines due to permanent ground deformations. Explosions occurred in the Kahramanmaras-Gaziantep Natural Gas transmission pipeline causing disruption of gas in the cities of Gaziantep and Hatay Fault Displacement Hazard. Water transmission pipelines were also damaged due to extreme fault offsets. This paper presents the findings from the earthquake affected zones. Particular attention was given to the performance of the 2600 mm diameter Duzbag-Gaziantep water transmission pipeline due to three reported challenges: (#1) The behavior of the pipe in the Duzbag tunnel, (#2) The pipe bend behavior at the fault crossing, and (#3) The pull-out of the pipe at valve room. Based on field observations, extreme damage forms at pipes were presented. A three-dimensional nonlinear numerical analysis was performed to simulate the observed damage of the reoriented water pipe at the fault crossing for Case #2. The nonlinear finite element model was able to capture the complex nature of the post-yield behavior of steel pipe as well as the damage locations along the pipe and their sequence of occurrences. As a mitigation measure for new pipes, the need for using flexible connections at critical crossings was highlighted. For existing pipes, the importance of developing secondary (by-pass) lines was emphasized.
