EFFECT OF PROPRIOCEPTIVE AND STRENGTH EXERCISES ON CALF MUSCLE ENDURANCE, BALANCE AND ANKLE ANGLE APPLIED: LATIN DANCERS
(Stellenbosch Univ, 2022) Odemis, Meric; Pinar, Yeliz; Bingul, Bergun M.; Bulgan Ercin, Cigdem
The aim of the study was to examine the effect of proprioceptive and strength exercises applied in addition to dance exercises on the endurance of calf muscles, balance and ankle angles. Participants were randomly divided into two groups as Training Group (n=14; 7 males, 7 females) and Control Group (n=13; 7 males, 6 females). The training group performed a 12-week training programme that included proprioceptive and strength exercises twice a week, just before dance training. Anthropometric measures, static-dynamic balance tests, single heel rise test and 3D kinematic tests were conducted. When the groups were compared, significant changes were observed in the double leg dynamic balance values of the training group, right leg dynamic balance values of the control group, and left leg dynamic balance values of both groups (p < 0.05). When ankle angles were compared, the first single heel rise and angle of movement of the last single heel rise values of the training group differed significantly (p < 0.05). The balance performance and calf muscle endurance of the dancers can be improved with proprioceptive and strength training, which can contribute positively to movements during the dance.

Effects of neuromuscular exercise and dance therapy on physical performance and kinesiophobia in GERIATRICS: A randomized controlled study
(Elsevier, 2025) Cetinkaya, Ozum; Nalbant, Ozgur; Odemis, Meric; Gulsoy, Hatice
Background Neuromuscular exercise is a comprehensive training approach encompassing functional movements, proprioceptive training, and perturbation exercises aimed at enhancing balance, muscle activation, and joint stability. Dance therapy, defined as the intentional and rhythmic movement of the body to music, serves as a physical and mental modality for promoting well-being. Objective This study aimed to compare the effects of a physiotherapy-based neuromuscular exercise program and dance therapy on physical performance and kinesiophobia in geriatrics. Methods Fifty-two participants were randomly assigned to either a neuromuscular exercise group (NE; n = 25) or a dance therapy group (DT; n = 27). Both interventions lasted 12 weeks. Assessments included the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) for functional balance, the Tinetti Balance and Gait Assessment (TBG) for balance and gait, the 30-Second Sit-to-Stand Test (30SSTS) for lower extremity strength and function, the Falls Efficacy Scale-International (FES-I) for fear of falling, Manual Muscle Testing for muscle strength, goniometric measurements for range of motion (ROM), and the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia (TSK). Results Functional balance improved significantly only in the DT group. (BBS, p < 0.05). Both groups showed significant within-group improvements in balance (TBG), lower limb function (30SSTS), and proximal muscle strength (MMT) (p < 0.05). Between-group analysis showed significantly higher baseline 30SSTS scores in the NE group (p < 0.05), and no significant differences were observed in fear of falling, ROM, or kinesiophobia. Conclusion Neuromuscular exercise and dance therapy are both safe and effective interventions for improving balance, lower extremity function and proximal muscle strength in geriatrics. Their incorporation into rehabilitation programs may support active aging. Trial registration ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT06395779.

Investigation of the Effects of Game and Yoga Training on Social Integration and Subjective Wellness
(Nevzat Demirci, 2023) Odemis, Meric; Gümüş, Emriye
The aim of this study is to examine the effect of games played before yoga on social integration and the effect of yoga training on subjective wellness. A total of 34 people with a mean age of 24,88±5,20 years, who had never practised yoga before, participated in the study. The participants were divided into two groups as game-supported yoga group (n:17) and yoga-only group (n:17). The first group consisted of those who played intra-group acquaintance and mingling games before each beginner-level yoga practice and then practiced yoga (Game+Yoga), while the second group regularly participated in beginner-level yoga practices. Both groups were asked to fill out the Social Integration Scale in Sport (Yilmaz 2006) and Subjective Wellness Scale (Uysal 2014) before and after 8 weeks. Descriptive statistics, Independent T-test, Paired Sample T-test and One Way Anova test were used in the analysis of the data through Spss 24 software. As a result of the findings obtained from the research, it was seen that there was no significant difference between the groups in terms of social integration and subjective wellness in terms of pre and post test values (p>0.05). However, when in-group comparisons were examined, it was determined that there were statistically significant differences between the pre-post test (p<0.05). According to the results of the study, it can be said that game-supported yoga training has no effect on social integration, but 8-week yoga training positively affects the level of social integration and subjective wellness. © The Author(s) 2023.
