Inadvertent Hypothermia in the Perspective of Operating Room Nurses: A Phenomenological Qualitative Study
(Elsevier Science Inc, 2024) Durmaz, Melike; Yuksel, Serpil; Kural, Serife K.
Purpose: The aim of the study was to reveal the awareness and perceptions of operating room nurses concerning inadvertent hypothermia, as well as their experiences and recommendations for its prevention. Design: The study employed a phenomenological qualitative approach. Methods: This study was conducted with 17 nurses working in the operating room of a university hospital in Konya, Turkey. Data were collected face to face between 15 August and 30 September 2022 using the indepth individual interview method. The data were subjected to inductive content analysis. Written permission was obtained from the hospital, the ethics committee, and the participants to conduct the study. Findings: The mean age of the nurses was 28.4 years and the majority were female. The nurses were graduates of a four-year health vocational high school, a two-year nursing associate degree program, or a four-year nursing bachelors' degree program. Their operating room experience ranged from 1 to 22 years. All the nurses were aware of inadvertent hypothermia, and all but one encountered hypothermia and applied preventive measures. The data analysis revealed 263 codes, 12 categories, and 4 themes on the awareness and perceptions of operating room nurses about inadvertent hypothermia and their experiences and recommendations for its prevention. Conclusions: The findings showed that the majority of the participants were aware of inadvertent hypothermia and its risk factors, and frequently encountered inadvertent hypothermia despite implementing preventive measures. Investigation of the relationship between fear of the pandemic and health beliefs regarding breast cancer of women between the ages of 40-69
(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2025) Gur, Sevgi; Durmaz, Melike; Sara, Yasemin; Kural, Serife Kursun
Background: Given the paucity of studies in the existing literature that have evaluated the relationship between women's fear of the pandemic and their health beliefs about breast cancer, it was deemed necessary to conduct a study on this subject. The study was designed to ascertain the breast cancer risk status of women aged 40-69 years and to examine the relationship between pandemic fear and health beliefs about breast cancer. Materials and Methods: The descriptive and correlational study was conducted online data collection form from July to December 2021. The convenience sampling method was employed to recruit 180 women aged 40-69 years. Data was collected through the Introductory Information Form, COVID-19 Fear Scale and Champion's Health Belief Model Scale for Breast Cancer Screening. The 'Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Form was used to calculate participants' breast cancer risk scores. Results: The results indicated that the participation rate in the breast cancer screening program during the pandemic period was low (17.8%). A statistically significant positive and very weak relationship (rho = 0.179) was found between the total score of the COVID-19 Fear scale and the total score of the Health Belief Model (HBM) scale. Furthermore, a weak positive relationship (rho = 0.340) was found in the seriousness sub-dimension. These relationships were found to be statistically significant (P < 0.01). As the total score of the COVID-19 Fear scale increased, the total score of the HBM scale and the seriousness sub-dimension scores decreased. Conclusion: It was found that the fear of contracting COVID-19 negatively affected their behaviors to maintain their health beliefs about breast cancer prevention. As a result, it is recommended that women be encouraged to participate in screening programs to protect, maintain, and improve their health during the pandemic.

Student nurses’ perceptions of the concept of blended education during the covid-19 pandemic: A metaphor analysis study
(Selcuk University, 2025) Durmaz, Melike; Şara, Yasemin; Kurşun Kural, Serife
Aim: The purpose of this study is to determine the perceptions of nursing students regarding the concept of "Blended Education", which was implemented for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, through metaphors. Methods: The study, nursing students receiving undergraduate nursing theoretical education online and clinical practices face-to-face during the pandemic were determined as the criterion. The study was conducted in the phenomenology approach pattern, forming the basis of qualitative research. The universe and sample of the study consisted of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year nursing students (n=593, n=331) studying at the Faculty of Nursing in the 2021-2022 academic year. The research data were collected face-to-face between March 1 and April 30, 2022, using the “Metaphorical Perceptions Data Collection" tool. Content analysis based on metaphor analysis was used in data analysis. Data analysis was carried out in five stages. Results: Data analysis was carried out in five stages. Student nurses created 160 metaphors for the concept of blended education. The obtained metaphors were examined in terms of similarities and combined under two categories as “Academic dimension” and “Psychosocial dimension”. The metaphors frequently employed in student narratives, such as "a nightmare" and "a severe illness," reveal the psychological burden and negative experiences associated with hybrid education. Conversely, metaphors like "incomplete knowledge," "a foundationless building," and "an unfinished painting" highlight the perceived deficiencies in academic processes arising from hybrid education. Conclusions: In line with this result, it is of great importance to integrate empowering educational content into the curriculum to eliminate students' academic and psychosocial concerns. In addition, it is recommended that various courses be organized and universities' technical infrastructures be strengthened to increase the competencies of academics. © 2025, Selcuk Universit. The Effect of Continuing Nursing Care Applied with a Coaching Strategy for Patients with Total Knee Replacement on Some Patient Outcomes: A Randomized Controlled Study Protocol
(Selcuk University, 2022) Durmaz, Melike; Kurşun Kural, Serife
Aim: This study aims to determine the effects of continuous nursing care applied with a preand postoperative coaching strategy to patients with total knee replacement on some patient outcomes (pain control, anxiety level, self-care power, activities of daily living, patient satisfaction, hospital readmission status, and use of painkillers). Materials and methods: This research was a parallel group (experiment-control) randomized controlled clinical trial. Data were obtained from patients who underwent 72 knee replacement surgeries between January 20, 2021, and October 28, 2021, using the Patient Identification Form, the Visual Analog Scale, the Self-Care Scale, the Newcastle Nursing Satisfaction Scale, the State Anxiety Inventory, and the Barthel Daily Living Activity Index. The patients were followed up preoperatively and postoperatively. This study is registered in the Clinical Trials database (NCT04683588). Results: Statistical analysis of the data obtained from this research was calculated using the SPSS 25 package program in the computer environment. Number, percentage, mean and standard deviation were used for descriptive statistics, and chi-square analysis was used to compare the similarity/homogeneity of the groups regarding descriptive characteristics. Obtained results were evaluated at a p<0.05 significance level. Conclusion: As a result of the research, it was concluded that the patients in the experimental group had a positive effect on pain, analgesic use, anxiety, self-care power, activities of daily living and patient satisfaction compared to the patients in the control group. © 2022 Selcuk University School of Medicine.
