Öğe Investigation of the Relationship Between Disaster Risk Perception and Emotional Intelligence of Associate and Bachelor’s Degree Students in Türkiye(Paramedik Eğitiminde Standardizasyon ve Akreditasyon Derneği, 2024) Aslan, Zehra; Demiröz, KaderThis study aims to investigate Turkish society’spreparedness for disasters, which is thought to be insufficient. Disaster risk perception has a prominent role in the evaluation of individual’ s preparedness for disasters. Individuals with an improved perception of disaster risk are believed to be better prepared against disasters. Factors such as educational status and background, emotional intelligence level, previous experience and socio-demographic characteristics are also thought to affect individual’ s disaster risk perception and readiness. In the framework of these factors, it is thought that individuals who are at the upper end of the spectrum are likely to have improved disaster awareness and their attitudes and behaviours towards disaster preparedness are likely to be positively different. The population of this study consisted of associate and bachelor’s degree students. The Disaster Risk Perception Scale and Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test were applied to volunteer associate and bachelor’ s degree students, and a total of 298 students were selected as participants. Of the participants, 71.8% were female and 28.2% were male. Sub-dimensions of disaster risk perception are exposure, anxiety, impact and inability. The study has concluded that emotional intelligence is the predictor of disaster risk perception and that emotional intelligence and disaster risk perception are directly proportional. It has also been concluded that gender, age, education level and disaster experience are among the factors affecting disaster risk perception. No studies investigating the relationship between disaster risk perception and emotional intelligence were found as a result of the literature review. The relationship between these two variables can be measured by future researchers by conducting the study with different groups.
