Innovative Parking Solutions in Smart Cities
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2023) Celik, Gurkan; Uluşar, Umit Deniz; Sarsenbay, Aknur; Taleb-Ahmed, Abdelmalik A.
Urban population growth has surged globally over the past century, resulting in both positive and negative effects in various terms. Many engineering solutions is required for these negative consequences because of the increased demand for the limited resources. As urban area expand, more residents choose to travel by car, leading the issues like traffic congestion and parking problems. The Internet of Things (IoT) and smart city infrastructure have a crucial role to play in addressing the urban parking problem and many secondary issues associated with them, such as financial, environmental, and time expenditures, due to the difficulties encountered in finding a parking spot. The primary objective of this article is to explore the existing smart parking system solutions and the use of advanced technologies in the smart city concept. As an interdisciplinary comprehensive study, this article offers insights for the researchers interested in studying the parking problem, which is predicted to become even more chronic in future cities. The deployment of smart parking, enabling cars to park for shorter periods while also increasing the city's revenue from parking fees through adaptive parking charges is one of the ideas discussed in this work. © 2023 IEEE.
