Öğe Evaluation of Periapical Healing Outcomes of Single-visit Non-surgical Endodontic Retreatment of Teeth with Apical Periodontitis in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: a Retrospective Study(Quintessence Publishing Co Inc, 2025) Isik, Merve; Cankaya, Tulin Dogan; Aydin, Zeliha UgurObjective: To compare the results of non-surgical endodontic retreatment (NSER) applied in a single visit between type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) patients with teeth with apical periodontitis (AP) and healthy individuals. Methods: The subjects enrolled were divided into two groups. The type 2 DM group was composed of 26 single-rooted mandibular teeth belonging to 26 patients (aged 45.04 +/- 10.13 years; 19 women and 7 men) who did not have any other systemic disease. The control group, meanwhile, consisted of 27 single-rooted mandibular teeth from 27 patients (aged 37.78 +/- 12.61 years; 15 women and 12 men) with no systemic disease. Both groups received single-visit non-surgical endodontic retreatment. Periapical radiographs were taken with a parallel technique before NSER and at least 6 months after treatment. Periapical index scores (PAI) for the relevant teeth were recorded. The data obtained were analysed statistically. P <0.05 was considered significant. Results: In both groups, postoperative PAI values decreased compared to the initial values after NSER treatment applied in a sin gle visit (P <0.05); however, there was no significant difference in the change in PAI values over time between the control and type 2 DM groups (P > 0.05). There was also no significant difference in healing between men and women in both groups (P >0.05). Conclusion: Following single-visit NSER in teeth with apical periodontitis, similar treatment outcomes were achieved in patients with type 2 DM and healthy individuals.Öğe Evaluation of Residual Root Canal Sealer Removal Efficacy of Different Irrigation Activation Techniques by Confocal Laser Microscopy Analysis(Marmara Univ, Inst Health Sciences, 2023) Aydin, Zeliha Ugur; Altunbas, Demet; Akdere, Sevim Kosumcu; Meseci, Buera; Cankaya, Tulin DoganObjective: The purpose of this study was to use confocal laser microscopy analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of conventional needle irrigation (CNI), EndoActivator (EA), and EDDY during endodontic retreatment. Methods: This study included 45 maxillary incisor teeth with a single root and canal. Root canals were prepared with ProTaper Universal files (Dentsply Sirona, Ballaigues, Switzerland) and obturated with labeled sealer mixed with 0.1% Rhodamine B and gutta percha according to single cone techniques. Initial root canal filling material was removed using ProTaper Universal Retreatment files and F4 files. Teeth randomly were divided into 3 groups (n = 15) depending on the activation technique: CNI, EA (Dentsply, Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, OK), and EDDY (VDW, Munich, Germany). Confocal laser microscopy was used to evaluate the penetration area, depth, and percentage of the residual sealer in the apical, middle, and coronal sections after irrigation activation. Results: In all sections, the EDDY group had a lower penetration area of residual sealer than the CNI group (P< .05). In comparison to the coronal section, the penetration percentage of the CNI and EA groups was lower in the apical section (P< .05). In the CNI group, the penetration depth was higher at the coronal section than at the apical and middle sections (P< .05), and it was higher at the coronal section than at the apical section. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, none of the activation systems tested could completely remove the residual sealer. However, the lowest residual sealer was seen after using EA and EDDY.Öğe Evaluation of the efficacy of different irrigation activation techniques in removing of calcium hydroxide on teeth with the simulated internal root resorption cavity: a confocal laser scanning microscope analysis(Springer London Ltd, 2024) Furuncuoglu, Fatma; Ugur Aydin, Zeliha; Cankaya, Tulin Dogan; Ocak, Mehmet GorkemThe aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of different irrigation activation methods on root canal sealer penetration in teeth with simulated internal root resorption (IRR) and calcium hydroxide (CH) applied using a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). 60 incisors with a single root and a single canal were included in the study. IRR cavities were created in the middle third of the root canal, and CH was placed. The samples were randomly divided into 4 groups (n = 15) according to the irrigation activation method to be tested: standard needle irrigation (SNI), sonic activation (EDDY), photon-induced photoacoustic flow (PIPS), and shock wave enhanced emission photoacoustic flow (SWEEPS). After irrigation activation applications, the root canals were obturated. Sections of 1.0 +/- 0.1 mm were taken from the apical, middle, and coronal regions of each sample. The penetration area (mu m2) and maximum penetration depth (mu m) of the root canal sealer were examined by CLSM and analyzed using ImageJ software. Statistical analysis was performed with a one-way ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey test at the P < 0.05 significance level. Among all irrigation activation methods tested, both the penetration area and maximum penetration depth of the root canal sealer were greater in the coronal region than in the apical region (p < 0.05). In the IRR region, there was no difference in terms of maximum penetration depth between PIPS and SWEEPS (p > 0.05), it was highest in SWEEPS (p < 0.05). PIPS and SWEEPS were better than other irrigation activation methods in the penetration of root canal sealer in the resorption areas of teeth with IRR.
