They have a potential capability for promising energy systems. Especially, as a clean and renewable energy source, fuel cells have very significant importance. There are many types of fuel cells such as alcohol, hydrogen, biofuel cells etc. This chapter examines the general electrochemistry of fuel cells. Furthermore, the basis of a fuel cell, fuel cell chemistry, substrates and potentials, electrochemistry, types of the electrode, potentiostats have been examined in detail. These composite can also be used for robotics, biomedical and biomimetic applications. Among these applications, ionic polymer metal composite actuators are mostly preferred devices used in some applications, such as biomimetic robotics, biomedical devices, manipulation systems etc. For these types of actuators, ion-exchange polymer-metal composite (IPMC) is very attractive and active materials, and the synthesis and characterization conditions are very important parameters that should be thought. However, their power output and stability is low due to the influence of the cathode, electrolyte, membrane, microorganism of the anode, and cell configuration. The choice of appropriate characterization techniques and methods to examine these problems, which limit the development of MFCs, is extremely important. For this reason, this chapter focuses on biochemical and electrochemical characterization techniques in order to examine a variety of surface morphology, analytical and spectroscopic details.
