Öğe A Novel Bivariate Elliptic Fuzzy Membership Function: A Modeling and Decision-Making Tool for Bike Sharing(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2023) Başaran, Alparslan A.; Başaran, Murat Alper; Demir, Mehmet OzerIn this paper, the data set generated by Bike Sharing System (BSS) has been modeled by a proposed method called fuzzy bivariate elliptic membership function that generates membership values between an independent variable and dependent variable whose functional form follows an ellipse since all numerical variables following a cyclic pattern such as season, month, hour, weather situation and so on. Besides, each membership value corresponding to each independent and dependent variable is used to find an aggregate outcome of a dependent variable based on a new decision-making tool. Therefore, how both weather and time combinations have an impact on the dependent variable could be derived. Since there is no built-in membership function available, the data set is used to construct a data-driven elliptic fuzzy membership function. Thus, the Chebyshev inequality based on the correlated variables is used to determine both the a and b parameters of the elliptic function representing 95% of the whole dataset. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.Öğe Acculturation Research in Residential Tourism(University of Primorska, 2024) Cibere, Gabriela Uslu; Kantarci, Kemal; Başaran, Murat Alper; Uslu, YakupAlthough the acculturation theory has been tested in tourism, there are almost no empirical studies in residential tourism. It needs to be clarified whether the general assumptions of the acculturation theory can be applied or whether the specifics of residential tourism call anew for an evaluation of the preconditions of acculturation theory in this setting. The existing studies, however limited, are misleading. This article calls attention to this fact and shows the necessity of testing the presumptions of acculturation theory in residential tourism before further research is conducted. A questionnaire research was conducted among residential tourists in Alanya. A total of 489 questionnaires from over 12 countries were included, reflecting the residential market in Alanya. The preference for a specific acculturation strategy was tested in relation to the influencing factors and level of satisfaction with life in the destination. The most preferred strategy by international residential tourists was integration, followed by assimilation and marginalisation. The strategy preference was influenced by demographic characteristics, holiday behaviour factors, second home characteristics, personality traits, and level of knowledge about Turkish culture. The overall level of satisfaction with life was 4.3 out of 5, which implies a very high level of satisfaction. Following limited previous research, the article uncovers the pitfalls and proposes a more suitable approach for acculturation research in this area. If the unique circumstances of residential tourism are taken into consideration, the study reveals some results that oppose the general acculturation theory and thus calls for further research. © 2024 University of Primorska. Although Kazakhstan offers unique foods, beverages, and establishments, few studies have investigated customers’ reviews of the restaurant business. Hence, this is a pioneering study examining problems and concerns of the restaurant sector in the eyes of customers in Almaty, Kazakhstan by implementing big data analysis. The scraped dataset from the TripAdvisor website contains more than 13,000 restaurant reviews in different languages between 2010 through 2023. Generally, English and Russian are the two dominant languages used in reviews in Almaty. Text mining techniques of topic modelling and sentiment analysis are applied in order to derive and understand the main focuses, problems, and concerns of restaurant customers. To do this the collected data between 2010–2023 is split into two roughly equal datasets that cover the periods between 2010–2017 and 2018–2023, respectively. It is revealed that while restaurant customers were less satisfied with the service process, the most positive reviews, written in both English and Russian, were obtained for the topic ‘Atmosphere and Events’. Considering the service process as a holistic process, analysing the conditions affecting good service delivery and making improvements will urge restaurant customers to form positive opinions. This study provides an opportunity for managerial, operational, and marketing departments in Almaty to improve the restaurant business in the eyes of customers. Since no precise information about the themes of the restaurants is available on the restaurant pages, no thematic distinction could be provided. © 2024 University of Primorska. For such reasons, people decide to visit unique destinations and spend time there. Almaty, the largest city of Kazakhstan, is one of the significant attraction centers of the Central Asia region, offering tourists unique and pleasant features with several tourist attractions. This study aims to analyze online user reviews of tourist attractions in Almaty, Kazakh-stan, using machine learning and text mining methods. The primary focus is on identifying the main the-matic clusters of reviews and their sentiment and comparing these themes with the types of attractions: historical, natural, and man-made. A total of 7,515 reviews were collected from the TripAdvisor website. The data was processed using sentiment analysis, topic modeling, and hierarchical clustering methods. The analysis revealed that 38% of the reviews were related to natural attractions, 34% to man-made, and 28% to historical ones. The most positive reviews were associated with natural attractions, while historical and man-made attractions received 79.38% and 81.40% positive reviews, respectively. In addition, the items that make up these attractions are identified, and their sentiment levels are pointed out. In addition to this situation, visitors have the most positive expressions for natural attractions, especially landscapes and lakes. The findings emphasize the importance of considering review themes to improve the quality of tourist services and to enhance the positive image of Almaty as a tourist destination. © 2024, Institute of Economics Committee of Science MSHE RK. Design/methodology/approach FRBS, based on fuzzy set theory, is used using the data set of four- and five-star hotels in the Alanya destination in Turkey collected from HolidayCheck.de website for the period between 2009 and 2016. Findings Single attributes do not have an impact on PP. At least two or more attributes are necessary to have an impact on PP. Compensations among attributes that are observed to be leading to PP not to change from their current level. Instead of assuming a linear relationship between hotel attributes and PP, non-linearity should often be assumed. In addition, some hotel attributes do not have an impact on PP until some other attribute reaches a certain level. Research limitations/implications The limitations of this research can be grouped under two topics. While the first is related to data, which is German-speaking tourists staying at four- and five-star hotels between 2009 and 2016, the second is the limitation on generalizability. By implementing other types of data related to hotel attributes, new insights can be generated to shed light on different aspects of the relationship between hotel attributes and PP or other measures such as overall evaluation. Originality/value A data-driven model called FRBS is constructed using original verbal statements. Novel insights pertinent to relations between hotel attributes and PP have been extracted. In classrooms, air conditioners (ACs) are often switched on and run at different fan levels, dynamically changing the BNL and affecting speech intelligibility. Objective descriptors used to evaluate speech intelligibility are articulation loss of consonants (ALC), speech transmission index (STI), and useful-to-detrimental ratio (U50). This study examined the effect of ACs on speech intelligibility through calibrated SNR measurements and IEC-compliant STI analysis in five different unoccupied university classrooms. Measurements were calibrated using reference standards, and STI values were corrected according to IEC 60268-16:2020 Annex M requirements when signal-to-noise ratios fell below 20 dB. The results demonstrate that background noise level has a stronger influence on speech intelligibility than reverberation time, with noise control taking precedence over reverberation management in typical classroom environments. Contrary to literature claims, no significant correlation was found between STI and U50 (r = 0.029, p > 0.05), challenging the interchangeable use of these descriptors in HVAC-affected spaces. Statistical modelling revealed that BNL explains 92.1% of STI variance compared to 81.4% for reverberation time (T30), with micro-perforated panels improving intelligibility primarily through noise reduction rather than reverberation control. The correlations between STI and T30 weaken substantially with increased AC noise, particularly at mid-frequencies, while high-frequency relationships (2000–4000 Hz) remain most predictive of speech intelligibility. These findings underscore the need for case-specific acoustic validation over universal correlation assumptions in real-world classroom environments. © The Author(s) 2025Öğe Evaluation of hotel performance attributes through consumer generated reviews: The case of Bratislava(2020) Cıbere, Gabriela Uslu; Başaran, Murat Alper; Kantarcı, KemalSlovakia is positioned in a highly competitive market of Central European countries with geographical and cultural similarities. This study analyses hotel performance through hotel performance attributes using consumer generated reviews posted on the number one hotel rating social platform TripAdvisor. Hotel reviews based on real travel experience is a valuable source of information about the hotel’s performance evaluated by tourists directly. Several interesting findings resulted from the research and further implications were advised.Öğe Fuzzy correlation and fuzzy non-linear regression analysis(Springer Int Publishing Ag, 2016) Başaran, Murat Alper; Simonetti, Biagio; D'Ambra, LuigiIn this chapter, we will deal with fuzzy correlation and fuzzy non-linear regression analyses. Both correlation and regression analyses that are useful and widely employed statistical tools have been redefined in the framework of fuzzy set theory in order to comprehend relation and to model observations of variables collected as either qualitative or approximately known quantities which are no longer being utilized directly in classical sense. When fuzzy correlation and fuzzy non-linear regression are concern, dealing with several computational complexities emerging due to the nature of fuzzy set theory is a challenge. It should be noted that there is no well-established formula or method in order to calculate fuzzy correlation coefficient or to estimate parameters of the fuzzy regression model. Therefore, a rich literature will accompany with the readers. While extension principle based methods are utilized in the computational procedures for fuzzy correlation coefficient, the distance based methods preferred rather than mathematical programming ones are employed in parameter estimation of fuzzy regression models. That extension principle combined with either fuzzy arithmetic or non-linear programming is two different methods proposed in the literature will be examined with small but illustrative examples in detail for fuzzy correlation analysis. Fuzzy non-linear regression has been a relatively new studied method when compared to fuzzy linear regression. However, both employ similar tools. S-curve fuzzy regression and two types of quadratic fuzzy regression models in the literature will be discussed.Öğe Kimlik Arayışında Yeni Bir Eğilim: Orta Asya’da Atayurt Turizmi(2021) Kantarcı, Kemal; Özyurt, Paşa Mustafa; Başaran, Murat AlperOrhon yazıtlarından biri olan Bilge Kağan yazıtında “Türk halkı (bu huyundan) vazgeç ve nadim ol! Constructed websites in several languages trigger a new way of data collections resulting in data streams leading to the accumulation of vast amounts of data, called big data. The need for analysis is in high demand. This study aims to construct a model to investigate which single attribute or interrelated ones having an impact on the performances of hotels. Design/methodology/approach: The total number of 1,137 observations collected from the website HolidayCheck.de are used from the hotels in the Bavaria region in 2016. Bavaria is a region where both domestic and foreign travelers mostly prefer to visit. Fuzzy rule-based systems, which is a combination of fuzzy set theory (FST) and fuzzy logic, are used. Although the FST is used to convert linguistically expressed perceptions by travelers into mathematically usable data, fuzzy logic is used to construct a model between service attributes and price-performance (PP) to attain the set of single and interrelated attributes on the assessment of PP. Findings: No single attribute plays a key role in PP assessment. However, two or more interrelated combinations have different impacts on PP. For example, when “Food—Drink” and “Room” moves together from average to good level, PP reaches the highest level of assessment. Research limitations/implications: Accessibility to too much data is difficult. Practical implications: A model can be continuously run so that any changes can be observed during the incoming of data. Social implications: As the consumer reviews and ratings are the crucial source of information for other travelers, hoteliers must monitor and respond them on time in order to deal with the complaints. Originality/value: Travelers’ perceptions or evaluations are treated with a FST that measures the impression of human beings. New modeling enables researchers to observe not only any single attribute but also interrelated ones on the PP. © 2020, Emerald Publishing Limited.Öğe Otel performanslarının tüketiciler tarafından oluşturulan seyahat 2.0 yorumları aracılığıyla değerlendirilmesi: Kırgızistan uygulaması(2017) Kantarcı, Kemal; Başaran, Murat Alper; Özyurt, Paşa MustafaOteller turizm ürününün ayrılmaz parçalarından bir tanesidir ve seyahat 2.0 teknolojilerine dayalı olarak müşteri tarafından oluşturulan yorumlar tüketici satın alma sürecini etkileyen yeni bir olgu olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Therefore, the literature is vast. However, researchers still try to look for a method that is expected to have estimated spreads as small as possible and good predictions. Each parameter estimation method proposed in the literature has treated fuzzy numbers based on how it implements the data. Namely, the proposed methods somehow restrict the usage of the fuzzy data. In this chapter, a novel method consisting of new notions and calculation procedures is proposed in order to find the parameter estimates of fuzzy linear regression. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.Öğe Quantification of qualitative assessments using computing with words: In framework of fuzzy set theory(Springer, 2020) Başaran, Murat Alper; Simonetti, Biagio; Başaran, Alparslan AbdurrahmanWhen qualitative data are collected, which is a widespread situation encountered in several disciplines ranging from social sciences to decision making to engineering as a result of dealing with ill-defined concepts or with complex tasks to assess, there is a certain need to crunch them and infer from them. Hence, quantification, namely computing with words (CW), emerges as a research area. Even though social science disciplines deal with these types of data numerically using various Likert scales, fuzzy set theory first proposed by Zadeh dealing words or sentences with mathematically oriented manner in order to create machines that mimic the reasoning of human being brings new perspectives. Since then, its applicability has expanded into various disciplines for different purposes to transform subjectivity into objectivity. In this manuscript, the effort of transformation from subjectivity into objectivity will be reviewed based on the available proposed methods in the literature. Two illustrative examples will be employed. While the first illustrative example, which consists of balanced and unbalanced linguistic term sets, is used for each reviewed method in the literature to show its computations step by step, the second of which, balanced linguistic term set, is an example used in the literature that is employed. Therefore, a comprehensive review of the proposed methods with illustrative examples is presented.Öğe Residential tourists' perception of quality of life: Case of Alanya, Turkey(Akdeniz Univ Tourism Fac, 2018) Özyurt, Paşa Mustafa; Başaran, Murat Alper; Kantarcı, KemalResearches on tourism investigating quality of life have become an important study area for tourism scholars over the last few decades. Thus, focus points have started to evolve from the macro impact of tourism to the micro impact on individuals and their well-being. The aim of this study is to determine factors that have an impact on the perception of quality of life of the residential tourists. To this end, correspondence analysis and log-linear model are employed that visualize the results and reveal significant factors and interactions terms. According to findings, some demographic factors such as gender, duration of living in Alanya and nationality have an impact on quality of life perception of residential tourists. Besides, supportive evidence for adaptation level theory, used for explaining the effects of big life events on quality of life perception, was found.Öğe The factors affecting minorities’ satisfaction of health care service utilizing fuzzy rule based systems(2018) Demir, Mehmet Özer; Başaran, Murat AlperThe aim of the study is to determine factors in health communication, when minorities are serviced in a language different from their mother tongue. Health care service satisfaction when doctor and patient speaking the common language or the mother tongue is an important area of investigation. On the other hand, when either of them speaking different languages, namely, generally patients in the minority position speaking a language different from the one doctor speaks, health communication becomes cumbersome for both sides resulting in low level of health care service satisfaction leading to ultimately wide range of complaints from minority patients. How attributes playing roles on health care service satisfaction in minority patients by modeling the relationship is conducted. Therefore, single attributes and interrelated ones are determined. The data is collected using a questionnaire form based on stratified sampling method, 387 participants are included in the analysis. Questionnaires were distributed among minorities living in Vienna area. The factors that are impact on health care service satisfaction are extracted by factor analysis. Questionnaire data collected as verbal statements representing the subjective evaluations of participants transformed into mathematical functions using fuzzy set theory enables to model attributes affecting health care service satisfaction using fuzzy logic called fuzzy rule based systems. Modeling tool called Fuzzy Rule Based Systems is a mathematical model in order to explain which single factors and/or interrelated ones having impact on health care service satisfaction are determined by employing fuzzy set theory and fuzzy logic, which are the components of the mentioned mathematical model. The findings suggest that the first expectation by minority patients from doctors is to respect to their cultural differences. If it is met at the first glance, then health care service satisfaction tends to increase with the positive effects of other attributes. If not, health care service satisfaction stays at lower with no other attributes playing major roles. According to the findings of the study, other attributes or interrelated ones play significant roles on the health care service satisfaction when they are singly evaluated, which lead to comprehend not only single attributes but also interrelated ones by minorities.Öğe The Politics of Sustainable Consumption: A Fuzzy Logic Approach to Understanding How Political Orientation Shapes Environmental Attitudes and Behaviors(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2025) Başaran, Murat Alper; Demir, Mehmet OzerThe relationship between political orientation and sustainable consumption has been a focal point of research in environmental psychology, sociology, and behavioral studies. This body of work highlights how political beliefs significantly shape attitudes and behaviors toward environmental sustainability. Studies consistently demonstrate that individuals with left-leaning or liberal political orientations are more likely to engage in pro-environmental behaviors, such as sustainable consumption, due to stronger environmental concerns and a greater acceptance of climate science. In contrast, those with right-leaning or conservative orientations often exhibit skepticism toward environmental issues, influenced by system-justification beliefs, individualism, and resistance to regulatory interventions. Thus, environmental issues, particularly climate change, are politized. Political polarization has led to divergent perceptions of climate risks, with liberals more likely to adopt sustainable practices and conservatives more resistant to such behaviors. Additionally, materialistic values and economic priorities often conflict with sustainable consumption, particularly among politically conservative groups. Overall, the literature underscores the critical role of political orientation in shaping environmental attitudes and behaviors, offering insights for policymakers and advocates aiming to foster broader engagement in sustainable consumption. This paper aims to validate political orientation and attitude towards environmental issues, mainly on sustainable consumption. The research forms the most influential policy combination of Progressivism and Conservatism based on three fuzzy models, Mamdani, Sugeno, and ANFIS, to reach sustainable consumption ideas that is supported by the consumers. Note that a high level of Progressivism has the most influential impact on sustainable consumption. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.Öğe Theoretical studies on mild steel corrosion inhibition by 5-substituted 1H-tetrazoles in acidic media(Esg, 2019) Elusta, Mahmud İbrahim; Başaran, Murat Alper; Kandemirli, FatmaIn this theoretical study, calculations for the three types of the tetrazole which are 2-(1H-Tetrazole-5-yl)-3-phenylacrylonitrile, 2-(1H-Tetrazole-5-yl)-3-(4-nitrophenylacrylonitrile), and 2-(1H-Tetrazole-5-yl)-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl acrylonitrile) showing the corrosion inhibition efficiency on mild steel in 1M HCl were carried out with the Density Functional Theory (DFT) at the B3LYP functionals with the use of 6-311g (d, p) basis set. Both the theoretical results and experimental data are in accordance based on the inhibition efficiency.Öğe Three dimensional patient-specific guides for guide pin positioning in reverse shoulder arthroplasty: An experimental study on different glenoid types(2022) Sadeghi, Majid Mohammad; Keçeci, Emin Faruk; Kapıcıoğlu, Mehmet; Aralaşmak, Ayşe; Tezgel, Okan; Başaran, Murat Alper; Yıldız, Fatih; Bilsel, KeremAbstract Introduction: Incorrect positioning is one of the main factors for glenoid component loosening in reverse shoulder arthroplasty and component placement can be challenging. This study aimed to assess whether Patient-Specific Instrumentation (PSI) provides better guide pin positioning accuracy and is superior to standard guided and freehand instrumentation methods in cases of glenoid bone deformity. Materials and Methods: Based on the Walch classification, five different scapula types were acquired by computed tomography (CT). For each type, two different surgeons placed a guide pin into the scapula using three different methods: freehand method, conventional non-patient-specific guide, and PSI guide. Each method was repeated five times by both surgeons. In these experiments, a total of 150 samples of scapula models were used (5 × 2 × 3 × 5 = 150). Post-operative CT scans of the samples with the guide pin were digitally assessed and the accuracy of the pin placement was determined by comparison to the preoperative planning on a three-dimensional (3D) model. Results: The PSI method showed accuracies to the preoperative plan of 2.68 (SD 2.10) degrees for version angle (p < .05), 2.59 (SD 2.68) degrees for inclination angle (p < .05), and 1.55 (SD 1.26) mm for entry point offset (p < .05). The mean and standard deviation errors compared to planned values of version angle, inclination angle, and entry point offset were statistically significant for the PSI method for the type C defected glenoid and non-arthritic glenoid. Conclusion: Using the PSI guide created by an image processing software tool for guide pin positioning showed advantages in glenoid component positioning over other methods, for defected and intact glenoid types, but correlation with clinical outcomes should be examined.Öğe Tourism Competitiveness Performances of the Most Visited Muslim-Majority Countries through Multi-Dimensional Scaling(Statistical Economic and Social Research and, 2022) Kantarci, Kemal; Başaran, Murat Alper; Özyurt, Paşa MustafaCompetitiveness has become a vital issue for tourism destinations, which provides destinations a high ground to strengthen their positions in the marketplace and benefit more from the positive impacts of tourism, as well as preserving the resources.
