    DETERMINATION OF HEDONIC HUNGER IN THE ELDERLY: CASE OF TURKEY

    Purpose: This study aimed to determine hedonic hunger and affactin factors in Turkish elderly people. Design and Methods: A cross-sectional research data collected face-to-face from 65 year and older 669 elderlies live in Alanya with >= 25 SMMSE score. Findings: MNA showed that 60.9% of men and 50.1% of women had normal nutritional status. Nutritional habits, physical activities, existing chronic diseases and medications of the elderly may affect their hedonic which increase the consumption quantity and tendency to delicious food with high fat, sugar and energy, and excite chronic diseases. Practice Implications: Nurses who detect malnutrition in the elderly need to refer the elderly to the relevant physician and dietitian in order to investigate the risk factors and take the necessary precautions, and they must exhibit a multidisciplinary solution approach.

    Investigation of the psychometric properties of the Turkish version Multidimensional Weight Locus of Control Scale (T-MWLCS) in individuals with different body mass index

    Introduction The Multidimensional Weight Locus of Control Scale (MWLCS) measures a individuals' focus on body weight or their beliefs about a lack of locus of control. Purpose This study was carried out to determine the validity and reliability of the Turkish culture-adapted version of the Multidimensional Weight Locus of Control Scale in adults, which was originally developed by Cebolla et al. Methods The sample of the study consists of 700 individuals between the ages of 19-64 who voluntarily agree to participate in online survey. Validity and reliability analyses were performed for the Turkish version Multidimensional Weight Locus of Control Scale. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was performed to evaluate the factor structure of the Turkish version Multidimensional Weight Locus of Control Scale. In addition, reliability analyses and Pearson correlations were also examined. Results Individuals were divided into two groups as those with normal (18.50-24.99 kg/m(2); n = 432) and those with overweight-obese body mass index (>= 25.0 kg/m(2); n = 268) and measurement invariance tested in both the groups. The four-factor structure (internal, chance, doctors, and other people) describing the weight locus of control was supported by confirmatory factor analyses. The sub-factors of the Turkish version Multidimensional Weight Locus of Control Scale were positively associated with the sub-factors of Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire (DEBQ). In addition, the scale showed configural invariance in different body mass index groups. Conclusions Findings from this study revealed that Turkish version Multidimensional Weight Locus of Control Scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool that can be applied in Turkish culture. It is thought that this scale will contribute to studies that will evaluate the focus of individuals in different body mass index groups related to weight control.

    Psychometric validation of the Turkish expanded mindful eating scale

    Background/Objectives The Expanded Mindful Eating Scale (EMES) assesses mindfulness by considering both individual health and environmental sustainability. A distinguishing feature of the EMES is its inclusion of sustainability, setting it apart from other eating awareness scales. This study was carried out to determine the validity and reliability of the Turkish culture-adapted version of the EMES in adults.Materials/Methods In this cross-sectional study, 662 Turkish adults (mean age=29.8, SD=12.18; 18.4% male) were recruited via an online questionnaire. In this study, participants were recruited via an online survey that included their sociodemographic characteristics, the EMES, Mindful Eating Questionnaire (MEQ), and sick, control, one, fat, food (SCOFF) Eating Disorders Scale. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to test the validity of the EMES. Analyses were conducted using SPSS version 25.0 and SPSS AMOS version 25.0. The 5-factor structure identified by Explanatory Factor Analysis (EFA) was validated using CFA.Results As a result of confirmatory factor analysis (RMSEA: 0.053, CFI: 0.89, GFI: 0.94, and AGFI: 0.92), model fit indices were obtained within acceptable limits. In the reliability analysis, it was observed that the EMES scale had a good level of reliability with the Spearman-Brown coefficient. A significant correlation was observed between the EMES and MEQ.Conclusion The results showed that the use of the Turkish version of the EMES is valid and reliable. It is thought that the validation of the Expanded Mindful Eating Scale reflects a comprehensive approach that recognizes the interconnectedness of individual health and environmental well-being.

    The effects of maternal body weight on iodine concentration in breast milk and cord blood and infant growth

    Breast milk (BM) is the only source of iodine and bioactive compounds that influence growth and development in infants. The content of BM may be influenced by maternal body mass index (BMI). The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of maternal weight on BM and cord blood iodine concentrations, growth-related hormones, infant anthropometric measurements. A total of 84 mother-infant pairs participated. Levels of leptin, adiponectin and insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) in postnatal BM and cord blood were analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), iodine by Sandell-Kolthoff reaction. Dietary iodine intake of women was determined by food frequency questionnaire, and anthropometric measurements of infants at birth and 3 months were evaluated. Dietary iodine intake was found to be similar in normal weight (NW) and overweight/obese (OW/OB) women (p > 0.05). Breast milk iodine concentration (BMIC) was 17.4 mu g in NW, 18.2 mu g in OB/OW women. Adiponectin in cord blood and IGF-I in BM were higher OB/OW than NW women (p < 0.05). Positive correlations were found between the infant birth weight and adiponectin in BM, between the infant body weight at 3 months and leptin and adiponectin in BM, between the infant birth head circumference and IGF-I in BM (p < 0.05). In multiple linear regression model, leptin and adiponectin in BM had a positive effect on infant body weight (p < 0.05). Maternal BMI may influence infant body weight via leptin and adiponectin in BM and infant head circumference via IGF-I. No relationship was found between maternal BMI and iodine levels and anthropometric measurements of the infant. Longitudinal studies are recommended to understand the effect of BMIC on growth.
