(Mdpi, 2025) Aslan, Zehra; Demiroz, Kader; Yildirim, Sevda Demiroz
Disasters can be defined as natural, technological, and human-induced events that cause loss of life and socio-economic impacts in societies and stop normal life. T & uuml;rkiye faces many disasters. The loss of life and economic losses caused by these disasters vary according to the type of disaster. Earthquakes are the natural disasters that affect T & uuml;rkiye the most. Described as the disaster of the century, the Kahramanmara & scedil; Earthquakes occurred on 6 February 2023 at 04:17 and 13:24 Turkish time. These earthquakes, with epicenters in Pazarc & imath;k (Kahramanmara & scedil;) and Elbistan (Kahramanmara & scedil;) with magnitudes of Mw 7.7 and Mw 7.6, affected 11 provinces including Kahramanmara & scedil;, Hatay, and Malatya, killing 50,399 people and damaging 1,279,727 buildings. One of the most significant challenges following earthquakes is the issue of housing, which is addressed through the implementation of temporary housing units. This study aimed to evaluate the temporary shelter areas created after the Kahramanmara & scedil; Earthquakes within the framework of regulations and standards in T & uuml;rkiye and internationally. The study data were collected through direct observation and participant observation. For this purpose, the Vali Saim & Ccedil;otur Tent City, which is located in the central Oniki & scedil;ubat district of Kahramanmara & scedil; and is the second largest tent city, was examined. As a result of the examination, it was concluded that the tent city did not comply with national and international standards. Based on the findings and results of this study, it is recommended that disaster plans are revised and training programs organized for practitioners in order to prevent similar mistakes in future disasters.

Method: The study was conducted using phenomenological design, which is one of the qualitative research methods. In the study, face-to-face interviews were conducted with twelve elderly individuals with disaster experience, and the transcriptions were coded by experts. Results: As a result of the code analysis, three themes were created by the authors. These themes are challenges and needs, lessons learned in disasters, and seeking support. Conclusion: This study revealed that elderly individuals face more difficulties and are more affected by disasters than others. Therefore, it emphasizes that elderly individuals should be included in integrated disaster management processes to increase their resistance to disasters.

Investigation of the Relationship Between Disaster Risk Perception and Emotional Intelligence of Associate and Bachelor’s Degree Students in Türkiye
(Paramedik Eğitiminde Standardizasyon ve Akreditasyon Derneği, 2024) Aslan, Zehra; Demiröz, Kader
This study aims to investigate Turkish society’spreparedness for disasters, which is thought to be insufficient. Disaster risk perception has a prominent role in the evaluation of individual’ s preparedness for disasters. Individuals with an improved perception of disaster risk are believed to be better prepared against disasters. Factors such as educational status and background, emotional intelligence level, previous experience and socio-demographic characteristics are also thought to affect individual’ s disaster risk perception and readiness. In the framework of these factors, it is thought that individuals who are at the upper end of the spectrum are likely to have improved disaster awareness and their attitudes and behaviours towards disaster preparedness are likely to be positively different. The population of this study consisted of associate and bachelor’s degree students. The Disaster Risk Perception Scale and Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test were applied to volunteer associate and bachelor’ s degree students, and a total of 298 students were selected as participants. Of the participants, 71.8% were female and 28.2% were male. Sub-dimensions of disaster risk perception are exposure, anxiety, impact and inability. The study has concluded that emotional intelligence is the predictor of disaster risk perception and that emotional intelligence and disaster risk perception are directly proportional. It has also been concluded that gender, age, education level and disaster experience are among the factors affecting disaster risk perception. No studies investigating the relationship between disaster risk perception and emotional intelligence were found as a result of the literature review. The relationship between these two variables can be measured by future researchers by conducting the study with different groups.
