Effect of a program based on a family-centered empowerment model on total knee arthroplasty patients and their caregivers: A randomized controlled trial protocol
(Selcuk University, 2025) Şara, Yasemin; Kurşun Kural, Serife; Tas Arslan, Fatma
Aim: This study aims to present the details of the program evaluating the effects of the Family-Centered Empowerment Model (FCEM) provided to individuals with Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) and their caregivers, on individuals' physically functioning and self-efficacy level, as well as the impact on caregivers' caregiving burden, caregiving competence, and coping skills with stress. Methods: This study is designed as randomized controlled experimental research. A total of 62 patients, including both an intervention group and a control group, will be included in the study. Data will be collected between December 2023 and August 2024 using the Participant identification form, Barthel Index of Activities of Daily Living, General Self-Efficacy Scale, Zarit Caregiving Burden Scale, Caregiving Competence Scale, and Coping with Stress Scale. Patients in the intervention group will receive counseling eight times over a five-week period, along with a structured booklet based on the FCEM. Patients in the control group will receive standard care, and in the final follow-up (after the 30th day post-surgery), they will be provided with the section of the booklet detailing the actions to be taken after the 30th day post-surgery. Results: In the statistical analysis of the data obtained from the research, descriptive statistics including frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation will be used. The chi-square test will be employed to compare the similarity/homogeneity of the groups in terms of their descriptive characteristics. The results will be evaluated at a significance level of p<0.05. Conclusions: Our study protocol will guide subsequent research by providing details of the FCEM program. Student nurses’ perceptions of the concept of blended education during the covid-19 pandemic: A metaphor analysis study
(Selcuk University, 2025) Durmaz, Melike; Şara, Yasemin; Kurşun Kural, Serife
Aim: The purpose of this study is to determine the perceptions of nursing students regarding the concept of "Blended Education", which was implemented for the first time due to the COVID-19 pandemic, through metaphors. Methods: The study, nursing students receiving undergraduate nursing theoretical education online and clinical practices face-to-face during the pandemic were determined as the criterion. The study was conducted in the phenomenology approach pattern, forming the basis of qualitative research. The universe and sample of the study consisted of 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year nursing students (n=593, n=331) studying at the Faculty of Nursing in the 2021-2022 academic year. The research data were collected face-to-face between March 1 and April 30, 2022, using the “Metaphorical Perceptions Data Collection" tool. Content analysis based on metaphor analysis was used in data analysis. Data analysis was carried out in five stages. Results: Data analysis was carried out in five stages. Student nurses created 160 metaphors for the concept of blended education. The obtained metaphors were examined in terms of similarities and combined under two categories as “Academic dimension” and “Psychosocial dimension”. The metaphors frequently employed in student narratives, such as "a nightmare" and "a severe illness," reveal the psychological burden and negative experiences associated with hybrid education. Conversely, metaphors like "incomplete knowledge," "a foundationless building," and "an unfinished painting" highlight the perceived deficiencies in academic processes arising from hybrid education. Conclusions: In line with this result, it is of great importance to integrate empowering educational content into the curriculum to eliminate students' academic and psychosocial concerns. In addition, it is recommended that various courses be organized and universities' technical infrastructures be strengthened to increase the competencies of academics. © 2025, Selcuk Universit.
