Does COVID-19 pandemic trigger career anxiety in tourism students? Exploring the role of psychological resilience
(Journal of Hospitality, Leisure, Sport & Tourism Education, 2022) Üngüren, Engin; Kaçmaz, Yaşar Yiğit
To understand tourism and events commuter students’ motivations, engagement, and learning experiences, semi-structured interviews with 14 students at a university in the UK were under- taken. These interviews revealed that in addition to increased tuition fees which incentivise the presumed cost-effective choice of commuting, mental health issues appear to be another major reason why commuter students decide to stay at home for the duration of their course. The findings also indicate that while commuter students in this study tended to prioritise their aca- demic integration, social integration with peers and participating in extracurricular activities were lacking, thus hindering their sense of belonging. As a result, several recommendations for universities are identified and proposed which could enhance commuter students’ sense of belonging. While the findings are particularly relevant to policymakers and academics in the UK, they resonate more widely in an era of changes in higher education on a global scale.

Innovations in management of hotel employees: The relationship between organizational resilience and work engagement
(2021) Üngüren, Engin; Kaçmaz, Yaşar Yiğit
In many destinations, crises such as hurricanes, floods, wildfires, earthquakes, terrorist attacks, and outbreaks negatively impact the tourism industry. Such crises stress out both management levels and employees, declining productivity. In an environment where the crisis is intense, tourism enterprises need to take the necessary precautions to continue their activities and ensure sustainability. This study focuses on the implications of organisational resilience on employees, which refers to the ability to continue its activities in the face of crises. This study, handled in the context of Social Exchange Theory, has two purposes. The first purpose of the study is to determine the effect of organisational resilience on organisational support and work engagement. The second purpose of this study is to determine the mediating role of organisational support in the relationship between organisational resilience and work engagement. The study is cross-sectional and employs a quantitative method.

The effect of fatalistic beliefs regarding occupational accidents on job satisfaction and organizational trust in hotel industry
(Akdeniz Univ Tourism Fac, 2017) Üngüren, Engin; Arslan, Serdar; Koç, Tayfur Süleyman
Occupational accidents pose serious problems in both Turkey and the world. The human factor seems to be the most common reason for these accidents. While preventive measures can be taken against occupational accidents, there are some humanistic obstacles, such as fatalistic beliefs, that impede these measures. The main purpose of this study is to test the effect of fatalistic beliefs regarding occupational accidents on job satisfaction and organizational trust. It was hypothesized that fatalistic beliefs in regards to occupational accidents have a negative effect on job satisfaction and organizational trust of employees. The study was carried out in five and four star accommodation companies in Alanya, Turkey. A quantitative research approach was adopted. Fully structured questionnaires were used as the measurement instrument. 1564 questionnaires were analysed. The Structural Equation Modelling analysis indicated that fatalistic beliefs regarding occupational accidents have a strong negative effect on both job satisfaction and organizational trust of employees in accommodation companies; therefore the hypotheses were strongly supported. These results indicate that attempting to overcome fatalistic beliefs and investing in occupational health and safety is a good business decision, as well as an ethical one.

The moderator role of financial well-being on the effect of job insecurity and the COVID-19 anxiety on burnout: A research on hotel-sector employees in crisis
(2021) Üngüren, Engin; Tekin, Ömer Akgün; Avsallı, Hüseyin; Kaçmaz, Yaşar Yiğit
During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which is caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), hotel-sector employees attempted to cope with the fear of becoming infected; however, they were also faced with job insecurity. Both the anxiety over COVID-19 and the risk of job insecurity have affected the employees' economic and social conditions as well as their mental state. The present study examined the effect of COVID-19 anxiety and job insecurity perceptions on the burnout levels of hotel-sector employees and the moderator role of the employees' financial well-being on this relationship. The study was conducted by collecting data from 396 participants who worked in 17 different five-star hotels in Antalya, Turkey. Because of social isolation and social distancing rules, our research data were obtained using an online questionnaire to avoid close contact with other people. The findings showed that COVID-19 anxiety and perceptions of job insecurity had negative effects on hotel employees in the form of mental burnout. In addition, we determined that as an individual characteristic, financial well-being was a moderator variable that affected the severity of burnout based on COVID-19 anxiety and job insecurity. The research findings exhibited theoretical and practical contributions for decision makers and researchers.
